CNN Poll: How Well Does the Republican Party Understand Women?

A new CNN/ORC International poll asks the question: how well does the Republican Party understand women?

The survey of 1,010 American adults, conducted from January 31-February 2, 2014, asked two related questions to discover which party Americans perceive as being truly in line with women’s issues.

  1.  Do you think the Republican Party generally understands the problems and concerns of women?

And

  1. Do you think the Democratic Party generally understands the problems and concerns of women?

Only 42% answered the first question, on the Republican Party, in the affirmative, with 55% saying no.  On the other hand, 63% of Americans believe that the Democratic Party understands the problems and concerns of women, with only 33% saying it does not.

Republicans struggled especially among women and non-white respondents with 59% and 68% respectively answering that the Republican Party does not understand.  Republicans fared much better in suburban and rural areas than urban areas, as 67% of urban respondents disagreed with the notion that Republicans understand women’s problems and concerns.

With America becoming more urban and less white, this poll suggests the Republican Party has some work to do in convincing expanding elements of the electorate that it understands the problems and concerns of women.
