A new Raleigh-based polling firm founded by Republican operatives announced last week that Democrat Kay Hagan is leading her top Republican challengers.
The pollster, American Insights, shows Hagan leading state House Speaker Thom Tillis 38 to 35 percent; Mark Harris 39 to 35 percent; and Greg Brannon 38 to 36 percent.
The pollster said this was the first time in 2014 that Hagan polled ahead of Tillis in any published survey.
The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percent.
According to Executive Director Matthew Faraci, American Insights plans to publish polls on issues it thinks are of interest and assist clients by tracking the opinions of highly targeted groups.
It also will track trends over time using the results of its own polling and other North Carolina organizations that conduct or procure polls, including the N.C. Civitas Institute, which is a conservative think tank, Democratic pollster Public Policy Polling, Elon University and High Point University.
